Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer - easy to apply nematode treatment.

Vine weevil is a garden pest that used to be difficult to control. If you think you may have a vine weevil problem then you will need to take steps to control them as Vine weevil is one plant insect pest that most gardeners live in fear of.

Otherwise healthy looking plants will collapse and die thanks to the root-eating, soil-borne young grubs. You should suspect a vine weevil attack if watering does not revive a plant that looks wilted. In the past, Vine Weevil has predominately targeted fuchsias, cyclamen, begonias and primulas. But in recent years a wider range of plants have become prone - thanks mainly to the increase in container gardening.

When to apply Vine Weevil Nematodes

Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is the simple solution to control vine weevil. It is an environmentally friendly organic treatment that is safe to use in areas where children, pets and wildlife may be present.

You apply the nematodes to pots and open ground from March to November. This is when the vine weevil larvae are present and the soil is above 5ºC. If applying under cover the pest's lifecycle is broken and Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer can be applied at any time, as long as the soil is above 5ºC.

Simply water the Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer nematode solution directly to the soil around the roots, which is where the larvae will be feeding. To keep a minor problem at bay, one treatment should be adequate. However, for a serious infestation, treat in the spring and again in the autumn. When treating pots take care that the pots are not allowed to dry out.

The nematodes, seek out the vine weevil larvae and attack the pest by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that stops the larvae from feeding, quickly killing it. They do not stop there. The nematodes reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer will kill larvae present in the area and protect against further larvae damage for up to four weeks.

  • Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is available in pack sizes of 160 pot or 12 sq.m/14 sq.yds or 100 sq.m/12

What damage does a vine weevil do and how do I recognise it?

Vine Weevil LarvaeThe adults eat plants in summer and autumn, leaving distinctive crescent-shaped notches on leaves. Finding and destroying the adults is difficult as they are nocturnal, quick moving and play dead once disturbed.

The vine weevil grub is far more of a danger to plants than the adults. The young larvae feed on plant root systems, initially on small fine outer roots, but progressively attacking the more important main roots as they grow bigger. The first signs of attack by the larvae are usually when the plant starts to wilt. This is too late to save it! It is therefore more important to kill the larvae than the adults.

Primulas, fuchsias, begonias, most evergreen plants and all plants in pots are particularly at risk. They also attack strawberry and raspberry plants.

Question? Is it important to use the nemotodes as soon as possible or will they keep in fridge for a while? Once mixed, does the solution have to be used all at once?
Answer! Vine Weevil Nematodes are a living product, The packs usually have a 3 weeks use by date on despatch and can be happily kept in the fridge until required. However, Nemasys advise that you use the entire packet in one go, and not to store the opened packet or a made up solution.

NOTE - This question is relevant to Commercial Growers only.

I have previously been using Intercept. I now need to pot on some plants from 9mm pots to 1 litre that already contain this. Is it safe to treat these with Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer please?

The Nemasys / BASF Technical Specialist has answered this question as followed.....

"Intercept contains Imidacloprid.

We have tested this on Nemasys and found it to be compatible. There should not be any problem applying Nemasys to pots already treated with Intercept."

An effective product, very swiftly delivered at a good price.
We garden organically and have found nematodes to be one of the most effective ways of combating pests in the soil.
Many thanks!

Very effective - good stuff!

I first bought this product 3 years ago when we had a severe infestation of vine weevil (there were thousands of them all over my garden). One application reduced them to manageable numbers. I rarely see any now but continue to use the nematodes twice yearly to ensure they don't take control again.
