Sweetcorn Earlibird is one of the earliest super sweet varieties currently available. It produces a good yield of high quality cobs, approximately 20cm in length, with 16 rows of small grains.

Along with Golden Gate, this probably the best variety to grow in most UK situations, as it has early maturity, as well as superb taste and texture.

Earlibird can usually be picked from end August onwards, and has good holding ability, so you can pick the cobs over several weeks. Best used as soon as picked for best flavour.

General Sweetcorn Growing Tips

It's hard to beat the taste of fresh sweetcorn, and the only way to get it at its best is to grow your own. Sweetcorn is an fairly easy crop to grow and ideal for beginners and experienced growers a like. The most important point is sowing time, and this is all down to temperature.

  • Sow seeds from mid-april onwards under protection for planting out after the risk of frost has gone, or if sowing in the open from mid-April to July for a regular supply of tasty roots. Sowings made from June onwards can be also be used for storing for winter use.
  • Alternatively, sow into large cell trays and plant out when ready.
  • If sowing direct in the ground, sow approx 2cm deep with a 10cm spacing in the rows, the rows should be around 30cm apart.
  • Dry soil will lead to woody roots, so water well and make sure the soil is always moist.
  • Protect early seedlings with fleece if a cold spell is forecast. Young beetroot plants are sensitive to cold and could bolt to seed early. There are bolt resistant varieties available and these should be your first choice for early sowings.
  • Feed every other week.
  • Do not let the beetroot get too big as this will reduce taste and quality.

Not a bad cropper and very sweet. Holds well so don't need to harvest all at once.
